SE needs to have a 'check launcher version' or something on the login screen. The portable hotspot thing then re opened ffxiv and it updated then after u can switch back to ur normal wifi. Okay what worked for me was I connected to my phones wifi. Blog entry `Unable to complete version check. The most recent update was an emergency one that happened around the 13th of September.

Whenever I got version check errors it was because the launcher was an older version and for some reason, it couldn't update itself to the most recent version.
